MANGROVE RESTORATION IN SUNDERBAN....
The project aims to restore ‘Green Belts’ in 6000 hac. of land in Sunderban, thereby increasing biodiversity resources for continued sustainable existance of the community and to protect the fragile embankment, the lifeline of Sunderban. This ‘green belt’ will also be responsible to sequestrate a large amount of CO2 in atmosphere. Visit of US Ambassador in Mangrove Restoration Programme
On 26th January, 2010 Timothy Roemer, US Ambassador and Beth Payne, US Consul General in Kolkata, visited village Mathurakhand in Bali Island , one of the villages where NEWS is generating mangrove nurseries through local community participation. The Ambassador and Consul General were delighted to see the work done by the villagers and NEWS and assured further wholehearted support. Nature Environment & Wild Life Society (NEWS), an organization engaged in conservation of ecology and wild life, has taken a project to plant 1000 hectares of mangroves in the first year and 5000 hectares subsequently in mudflats as well as along the embankement. LIVELIHOOD TRAINING PROGRAMME IN BUXA TIGER RESERVE
A good section of 1.5 million cattle from surrounding villages & tea gardens of Buxa Tiger Reserve graze regularly inside the forest. It causes tremendous pressure on hervivore food resources of the forest and thereby affects the dwindling tiger population of the reserve. The society has undertaken livelihood training programme for the local community so that the villagers can adopt alternative farming. .... more
