Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop
NEWS has organized Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction Workshops in Sunderbans for creating awareness, taking primary actions in Natural disasters like tropical cyclone, flood, tidal upsurges, tsunami etc. The training has three phases.

In first phase extensive training programme was organized for three days among the representative villagers of Sonagaon, Dulki, Mathurakhand, Pakhirala and Tridibnagar to ‘Training of the Trainers’ from 9th to 11th October 2009. 26 participants from the said villages mostly the Panchayets Pradhans/Members, EDC Jt. conveyors, EDC/FPC members, school teachers and three women representatives participated actively. Villagers also got involved in making charts, identifying vulnerable areas, mapping of the village etc. The CBRDM focused on understanding the links between risks, vulnerabilities, capacity building and reducing disaster impact in a lucid way through Participatory and Learning Action (PLA).

In the second phase from 6th to 16th April 2010, a two days training for making ‘Task forces (from the group of 40-45 persons/village)’ was organized. The task forces will take charge of mitigating the problems of people, especially in times of emergencies. Participation women in the development processes, protection of environment and in risk reduction has been given special attention.
In the 3rd phase which would be started in June would focus on ‘Training of Task forces’.

Annual Photographic Exhibition
NEWS conducted its annual photographic exhibitions on "Nature and Wildlife" in march 2010 at Academic of Fine Arts-Kolkata,which recieved huge applause from nature and wild life lovers of the city.Iterestingly most of the photo are contributed by the NEWS own memebers who are amatuer wildlife photographers

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION AT CBDRR
NEWS actively participated in the inaugral state level workshop on Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) congress (SAMBIT)conducted by the State Inter Agency Group in association with Disaster Manangment Dept-West Bengal on 22nd to 24th April 2010 and staged a mangnificent photgraphic exhibition on "Wildlife of West Bengal"which was throughly appreciated by every participating athuroties,NGOs, and delegates in the work shop

International Woprkshop of Elephant Conservation in West Bengal.
A one day Workshop divided in three sessions (namely North Bengal, South Bengal and Technical) addressed the present problems like Elephant deaths due to train accidents, poisoning and Human deaths, crop and house destruction due to elephant etc. Eminent scientists, high level forest officials, NGOs working in the field and representitives from Nepal, Bhutan, Assam and Jharkhand took part to suggest some reccomendations.

Royal Bengal Tiger in the 21 st Century at Rotary Sadan, Kolkata.
It was an international seminar to overview the present situation of tigers in the Indian sub continent .Eminent speakers from India, Nepal and Bangladesh attended the seminar. The proceedings were published in a book titled– Royal Bengal Tigers in the 21 st century.
Environment- Dimensions and issues at Rotary Sadan, Kolkata.
A workshop was held at Kolkata to discuss the different aspects of the environment, their problems and possible solutions. Eminent speakers from different streams throughout the country attended the workshop. A book was published containing the deliberations.
Sunderbans : Dimensions and Strategies at Rotary Sadan , Kolkata
A National seminar to address different issues of the Sunderban was held involving the Managers, NGO's, NGI's and scientists was held on conservation & Development of Sunderbans organized by NEWS & Forest Deptartment, Govt of West Bengal in collaboration with UNDP-India. Different problems of Sunderbans were discussed in order to formulate policies to solve these problems. A book was published containing the deliberations.
