Wetlands and Waterbirds of West Bengal
Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) has been working on the subject of wetlands since 1991. Our first project was “Survey of wetlands and their associated flora and fauna from an ecological perspective”. The other project was “Study of eight selected wetlands of West Bengal”. These projects were sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Govt. of India and Wildlife wing of Forest Department of West Bengal respectively. The society is engaged in ‘mid-winter waterfowl census' conducted by Asian Wetland Bureau since 1991. The book is the outcome of all these projects.
In this book, 58 major wetlands of 17 districts of West Bengal and their associated waterbirds have been covered along with coloured photographs of birds. The location, type of the wetland, maximum depth in monsoon, average depth, vegetation cover, uses, threats, protection, associated waterbirds are discussed in a nutshell about every specific wetland.
In the end, 75 waterbirds and 58 wetlands are placed in tabular form, so that one can find easily that which bird occurs in which wetland and whether the bird is winter migratory, local migratory, or resident to the wetland.
